I am writing to you on behalf of the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS), an international institution concerned with the wider history and culture of Europe in the twentieth century, and with ways of commemorating and popularising it. To this end, we undertake a range of initiatives, from the development and presentation of exhibitions and educational projects to networking and academic events.
One of these is the 'Genealogies of Memory' academic conference, now in its fourteenth year, which will focus on ‘Gentry, Nobility, and Aristocracy: Post-Feudal Perspectives.’ Hosted by the Faculty of Modern Languages at the University of Warsaw, the conference will take place from September 25th to 27th, 2024, in a hybrid format with the option for online participation.
The conference aims to explore the intricate and multifaceted memory of landowning elites in Europe following the dissolution of feudal structures. We invite scholars from diverse disciplines such as sociology, history, anthropology, and memory studies to contribute to this interdisciplinary dialogue.
This year’s conference seeks to investigate how the memory and legacy of landowning elites have evolved since the demise of feudalism, and the implications of this remembrance for contemporary European societies. We aim to adopt a comparative and contextualized perspective, examining regional variations and the interplay of class, ethnicity, religion, and political dynamics in shaping collective memory.
